Peace Day Elementary School & Middle School
Sunday, September 21, 2014 is International Peace Day and Qatar Academy Al Khor celebrated this annual event with a selection of songs, poetry and drama. The students arrived in the morning wearing white clothing as a way of bringing our attention to the specialness of the day. The program opened with an encouraging speech by Mrs. Aisha Al Megbali, Principal of QAK and Mr. Aymen Azzam, Assistant Principal of the Middle and High School, who addressed some issues on a global scale that prevented truly peaceful harmony for people, in parts of the world, such as infant mortality, lack of access to good schooling and education.
The grade 8 students under the guidance of their teacher, Mrs. Marwa Osman, presented a well-received presentation about the meaning of peace using each letter of the word PEACE to emphasize a point. Ms. Lisa Carson’s grade 6 Drama class of girls did a skit about dealing with getting along cooperatively and respectfully. The simplicity of this message made a great impact on the student body. A poetry read by Habiba Badawy from grade 10 stirred our hearts. Grades 1 and 2 sang “Be My friend”, directed enthusiastically by Ms. Iryna Myshkova. This was followed by John Lennon’s familiar song “Imagine” with a lead duet by two grade 5 students skillfully led by Mr. Carlo Pocklington. A beautiful nasheed led by the grade 4 students and Amna Hitmi, a grade 9 student, rounded off the program leaving the audience with words of quiet reflection.
The walls and bulletin boards of QAK were decorated by teacher’s displaying work the students had done in class and the Art Department inspired and created venues for all the students to produce meaningful Peace Day themes and creations.
